Track History and Fun Facts:
Aqueduct commenced its inaugural meet on September 14, 1959 . . . it's actually the second New York track to bear the name; the first, located on almost exactly the same plot of ground, was demolished in the mid-1950's . . . the furlong pole from the orginal Aqueduct can be found in the garden area behind the grandstand of the present-day track; there is also a historical marker commemorating the 1920 Dwyer Stakes, in which Man o'War defeated a very game John P. Grier by 1 1/2 lengths . . . Hall of Famer Kelso won 20 of 27 career starts at Aqueduct. . . while Belmont Park was being rebuilt, Aqueduct, from 1963-'67, hosted the Belmont Stakes; the winners of those renewals, in chronological order, were Chateaugay, Quadrangle, Hail to All, Amberoid, and Damascus. . . Aqueduct was the first New York track to host a Breeders' Cup--this took place on November 2, 1985 . . . the Cigar Mile is named for the horse who won the race (then the NYRA Mile) in 1994.
